Dr. Brendan Parent JD, professor of Medical Ethics and Bioethics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Langone Health, joined us in an insightful discussion about medical ethics and its place in healthcare.
Dr. Priyanka Porwal PhD, a public health dentist and medical writer based in Saudi Arabia, spoke to students about the basics of research, types of research, and levels of analysis. This lecture helped students break down their own capstone projects.
Dr. Marina Cordeiro MD, a precision medicine physician in Dubai, spoke to students on the growing field of precision medicine in the 21st century and its implications in healthcare.
Megan Parish MSc, PhD candidate in bioinformatics at the University of Brimingham, spoke to us about the basics of bioinformatics and its growing use in academia. She spoke on her personal research regarding cancer genomics and provided students with various databases to conduct their own analyses.
Marie, a biotechnologist, spoke about biotechnology and its advancedments due to technology, AI, and machine learning. She outlined the types of biotechnology with an in-depth view of what each entails, with a special focus on its use in medicine.
Dr. Jenny Bloodgood PhD, professor of veterinary science at Cornell University, joined us in a discussion about veterinary science, marine life, and animal preservation. We did a deep dive in Dr. Bloodgood's experience with animals and her research.
Omodolapo Lawal is a medical student at the University of Stouthampton in the United Kingdom. Omodolapo lectured to 80+ students on endocrinology and the endocrine system, and answer multiple insightful questions.
Charlotte is a first year PhD student studying at the University of Birmingham. Before her PhD, she studied a BSC in Biology at the University of York and an MSC in Immunology at Kings College London. Charlotte is doing extensive research in In Virto Dendritic Cell Maturation while being funded by Myeloma UK to study the Multiple Myeloma Precursor Disease Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Signficiance, aiming to tackle the issue of late myeloma diagnosis. Charlotte spoke to 70+ students on immunology and its frontiers.
Alexia Rusnov is a Student Respiratory Therapist at Conestoga College, completing her Clinical Placement in a hospital. She has completed her Bachelors of Applied Science in Human Bheavior at McMaster University. She's worked in the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, and Operating Room in a hospital environment. Alexia spoke to 70+ students on pulmonology and answered insightful questions.
Dr. Rohit Kapoor MD, hematologist and oncologist in India, spoke to us about the vast field of hematology and outlined the basics in hematology including blood anatomy and common hematological diseases such as leukemia.
Priya Tyagi, undergraduate student at the University of Maryland majoring in Cell Biology and Genetics, spoke to students about radiology, biomedical imaging, and her research project about machine learning and pediatric cancer tumors through radiomic features. Through a deep-dive of her research, students were able to craft their own using her insights.
Rida Shakeel, Sariya Khan, and Sohaib Chaudhry, all medical students in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, spoke to students about their medical research, types of research, and things to do after research is completed such as creating a research poster and attending research conferences.
Champion Lumumba, an aspiring neurosurgeon, spoke to a group of 15-20 students about neurosurgery and his academic experiences working up to his career. He shared his insights on psychiatry, and experiences he's seen in hospital settings. One statement Champion said that resonated within our BioMedizone team was this: "Seeing people go from hopeless because of their illness to happy and relieved because of us doctors is the reason why I chose this profession. Medical professionals have that power."
BioMedizone hosted two guest speakers for this event. Sumedha Sengupta, a Biomedical Science Masters student at the University of Dehli, has researched at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She has completed an internship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of Miami University, a bioinformatics internship at Indraprastha Institution of Information Technology, has been nationally recogized in her field, and has several publications under her name in neurology, organic chemistry, and biology. Anna Mazurenko, a Behavioral Neurosciece major with honors and distinction from the University of British Columbia, is certified in various aspects of wet lab and rodent work. Morgan Prather has completed a study on biomarkers and learning abilities, is a Teaching Assistant for the International Youth Neuroscience Association, and is mentored by a neuroscience professional. She aims for a Neuroscience graduate degree. These three esteemed speakers spoke to a group of 15-20 students on neuroscience and their experiences in the field.
